Rahasia Mengapa Gigi Sangat Kuat

Enamel gigi yang setara dengan kaca merupakan materi kuat, namun sekaligus rapuh. Meski begitu, jika kerapuhan gigi dibandingkan dengan pecahan kaca, gigi memiliki daya tahan yang lebih kuat.

Buktinya, walaupun gigi terus menerus dipergunakan untuk mengunyah, namun nyatanya gigi kita menjadi semakin kuat setiap harinya.

Para peneliti mengibaratkan kemampuan ini dengan struktur mikro seperti "keranjang anyaman" yang terdapat pada enamel gigi manusia.

"Hal ini masih menjadi misteri, bagaimana gigi bisa sekuat itu," ujar Brian Lawn dari National Institute of Standards and Technology yang dikutip oleh Times of India, Rabu (15/4/2009).

Dalam studi ini, para peneliti mengambil sampel gigi manusia, berang-berang, dan beberapa gigi hewan lain. Kemudian memperlakukan gigi tersebut layaknya potongan besi dan mempraktekan skenario seperti gerakan menggigit.

Lawn menjelaskan, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui sekuat apa gigi dapat bertahan sebelum menjadi rusak.

Tim peneliti menemukan bahwa struktur mikro berbentuk seperti "keranjang anyaman" pada enamel gigi ternyata menahan retakan yang terbentuk dan berpotensi merusak serta menyebar ke seluruh permukaan gigi.

"Temuan ini menjelaskan, mengapa ketika para dokter gigi memeriksa gigi orang dewasa, mereka dapat mengetahui jika pada gigi tersebut terdapat banyak retakan. Padahal gigi tersebut masih tetap utuh," ujar Lawn.

Ketebalan enamel dan ukuran gigi juga dapat mempengaruhi seberapa kuat gigi dapat mengunyah makanan.

Penelitian ini pun bermanfaat pula bagi para ahli antropologi. Karena mereka dapat menggunakan informasi tentang enamel sebagai rujukan studi tentang evolusi gigi pada primata dan hewan lain secara umum.

Struktur enamel pun dapat dimanfaatkan untuk mengembangkan substansi sejenis, termasuk juga untuk penggantian gigi palsu.

Kanker Payudara, Priapun Juga Bisa

Nampaknya priapun kini harus lebih waspada. Sebab selain wanita, pria tanpa disadari dapat membawa gen kanker payudara.

Selama ini penilaian kebanyakan masyarakat, bahwa kanker payudara hanyalah penyakit yang semata dimiliki kaun hawa.

Perlu diketahui bahwa remaja laki-laki dan perempuan mempunyai jaringan payudara. Berbagai macam hormon pada wanita menstimulasi jaringan pada payudara sehingga membuat payudara penuh.

Sedangkan pada tubuh pria secara normal tidak ada stimulasi hormon pada payudara, akibatnya jaringan payudara tetap kecil. Yang paling penting disarankan bagi kaum pria sebaiknya memeriksakan gen mereka, siapa tahu anda juga mengidap penyakit kanker payudara.

Gejala yang nampak yaitu berupa pertumbuhan payudara yang aneh serta membesar sama seperti kanker prostat, pankreatik dan kanker kulit.

Kadar estrogen yang tinggipun dapat menjadi faktor pria terkena kanker payudara. Faktor lainya yaitu usia, memiliki riwayat keluarga yang banyak menderita kanker payudara dan terpapar radiasi.

Mourinho"I only remember winning dates"

UMUM - ATLET BAHRAIN PERAIH EMAS OLIMPIADE TERBUKTI DOPING

Peraih emas nomor lari 1.500 meter Olimpiade asal Bahrain, Rashid Ramzi dan dua pembalap sepeda termasuk di antara enam atlet yang positif menggunakan obat terlarang CERA di Beijing tahun lalu, kata pejabat berwenang, Rabu waktu setempat.

Stuttgart, 30/4 (ANTARA/Reuters)- Peraih emas nomor lari 1.500 meter Olimpiade asal Bahrain, Rashid Ramzi dan dua pembalap sepeda termasuk di antara enam atlet yang positif menggunakan obat terlarang CERA di Beijing tahun lalu, kata pejabat berwenang, Rabu waktu setempat.

Atlet balap sepeda Italia peraih perak Olimpiade Davide Rebellin dan Stefan Schumacher dari Jerman, yang telah dihukum karena doping, juga ditegaskan positif menggunakan CERA bersama Ramzi melalui tes ulang sejumlah sampel yang diambil di Beijing tahun lalu.

Komite Olimpiade Internasional (IOC) Selasa mengumumkan telah menemukan tujuh hasil tes positif dari uji ulang atas sejumlah sampel yang diambil dari Beijing, yang melibatkan enam atlet.

Komite Olimpade Italia dan Bahrain menegaskan bahwa Rebellin dan Ramzi positif, sementara komfirmasi mengenai Schumacher diumumkan federasi balap sepeda Jerman.

Sumber-sumber yang dekat dengan IOC mengatakan, juara jalan cepat 20km Olimpiade Athena 2004 Athanasia Tsoumeleka dan pelari 800 meter Kroasia Vanja Perisic juga positif menggunakan obat terlarang itu ketika berlomba di Beijing 2008.

Media lokal di Zagreb, mengutip anggota senior Komite Olimpiade Nasional Kroasia, menegaskan bahwa Perisic telah gagal dalam tes doping.

Perisic tersisih dari pada putaran pertama Olimpiade Beijing.

Sementara itu Tsoumeleka, 27, yang finis urutan sembilan di Beijing, pada Olimpiade di Athena 2004 sempat membuat kejuatan dengan meraih emas, padahal setahun sebelumnya ia hanya di urutan ketujuh dalam kejuaraan dunia di Paris.

Komite Olimpiade Bahrain mengatakan, pihaknya akan menemui Ramzi, atlet pertama negara itu yang meraih emas Olimpiade, untuk menginformasikan mengenai temuan doping ini dan mendengar penjelasannya.

Komite Olimpiade Bahrain, yang menyatakan prihatin atas kabar dari IOC tersebut, mengingatkan bahwa Ramzi telah menjalani sejumlah tes doping sebelum dan selama Olimpiade Beijing, dan semuanya negatif.

Keenam atlet tersebut positif mengandung CERA (Continuous Erythropoiesis Receptor Activator), generasi baru pemompa darah erythoropoietin, yang tesnya dilakukan baru-baru ini.

Presiden Federasi Balap Sepeda Internasional (UCI) Pat McQuaid mengatakan, Komite Olimpiade Italia (CONI) melakukan kesalahan dengan menyebut nama atlet.

"CONI telah melanggar aturan, dan itu memalukan. Ini masalah internasional, dan dalam situasi seperti itu maka UCI yang berhak melakukan proses penindakan," kata McQuaid.

Para atlet, yang beberapa di antaranya belum disebutkan namanya, kini dapat meminta tes sampel B.

Jika sampel B juga positif, mereka terancam skorsing dua tahun untuk kasus pertama dan seumur hidup jika sudah pernah terlibat kasus serupa, seperti Schumacher. (

INDONESIA JUARA UMUM ILMUWAN PELAJAR TINGKAT DUNIA

Ilmuwan remaja Indonesia tampil cemerlang di tingkat dunia dengan perolehan medali emas terbanyak dan jumlah keseluruhan medali di antara mitra-mitra mereka dari Jerman, Belanda, Amerika Serikat, Rusia, Hongaria, dan Polandia.

Jakarta, 30/4 (Roll Sports) - Ilmuwan remaja Indonesia tampil cemerlang di tingkat dunia dengan perolehan medali emas terbanyak dan jumlah keseluruhan medali di antara mitra-mitra mereka dari Jerman, Belanda, Amerika Serikat, Rusia, Hongaria, dan Polandia.

"Kami bangga, Indonesia menjadi juara umum pada International Conference of Young Scientists (ICYS) ke-16 yang berlangsung di Pszczyna, Polandia, 24-28 April 2009," demikian pernyataan Kepala Bidang Penerangan, Sosial dan Budaya KBRI Warsawa Any Muryani yang diterima Antara di Jakarta, Kamis.

Ketua delegasi Indonesia pada ICYS Monika Raharti sebelumnya melaporkan bahwa pihaknya berhasil menggolkan keseluruhan 10 hasil penelitian para siswa Indonesia yang dipresentasikan di depan dewan juri dengan perolehan 10 medali, terdiri atas enam medali emas, satu perak dan tiga perunggu.

Dengan demikian, keseluruhan penelitian ilmuwan muda Indonesia yang dipertandingkan telah mendapat pengakuan internasional dan bahkan mengungguli berbagai negara superpower di bidang sains. Ini merupakan puncak prestasi berkat kerjasama keras anak-anak didik Prof. Yohanes Surya, kata Any Muryani.

Berdasarkan pengumuman panitia, berturut-turut hasil-hasil yang dicapai oleh negara negara peserta adalah Indonesia (6 emas, 1 perak, 3 perunggu); Jerman (3,4,2), Belanda (3,1,2), Amerika Serikat (3,0,0), Rusia (2,3,3), Hongaria (2,2,2), dan Polandia (2,2,1).

Negara-negara lainnya yang memperoleh medali adalah Belarus (1,1,0), Georgia (0,3,2), Ukraina (0,1,2), Ceko (0,0,2), dan Kroasia (0,0,1).

ICYS adalah lomba presentasi karya ilmiah remaja bergengsi tingkat dunia di bidang penelitian ilmu fisika, matematika, ilmu komputer, dan ekologi yang diselenggarakan setiap tahunnya mulai 1994.

Pertemuan tahunan ilmuwan remaja pada tingkat dunia itu dimaksudkan untuk menggali potensi peneliti muda yang kelak dapat berperan dalam penemuan dan pengembangan keilmuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas hidup seluruh umat manusia di dunia.

Dalam acara pembukaan tanggal 24 April di Museum Istana Pszczyna yang dihadiri oleh Presiden ICYS dan pejabat pemerintahan Polandia, Dubes RI Warsawa Hazairin Pohan dalam pidato sambutan menjelaskan Indonesia tampil untuk kedua kalinya di Polandia, setelah partisipasi pada ICYS 2005 yang lalu di Katowice yang hanya menghasilkan satu perunggu dan sebuah penghargaan khusus.

Dubes RI juga menyampaikan undangan bagi peneliti dari seluruh dunia untuk ambil bagian dalam pertemuan ICYS ke-17 yang akan dilangsungkan di Bali pada bulan April 2010, dengan Indonesia sebagai tuan-rumah.

Dalam pesannya kepada kontingen Indonesia, Dubes mendorong agar para siswa bertanding dengan percaya diri dan menajamkan kemampuan artikulasi dalam mempresentasikan temuannya di depan juri internasional menjadi kunci keberhasilan. Semua presentasi hasil riset dilakukan dalam bahasa Inggris.

Tuan rumah

Indonesia akan menjadi negara Asia yang pertama dipercaya menjadi tuan rumah sejak ICYS diselenggarakan pada tahun 1994. ICYS berdiri pada tahun 1994 diprakarsai oleh Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest Hungaria, dan Belarusian State University, Minsk, Belarus.

Indonesia, bersama India dan Jepang, duduk bersama mewakili Asia, mulai mengirimkan delegasi untuk pertandingan ilmiah tersebut mulai tahun 2005, bertarung dengan rekan-rekan mereka dari negara-negara Amerika dan Eropa. Prof. Yohanes Surya, Ph.D ditunjuk menjadi representatif ICYS untuk Indonesia sejak tahun 2004.

Hasil lengkap yang diraih peneliti muda Indonesia adalah sebagai berikut:

Tiga medali emas di bidang lingkungan hidup dengan judul (1) Durian to Fight Mosquito, oleh Jessica Karli dan Yosephine Livia Pratiknyo dari SMA Cita Hati Surabaya; (2) Saccharomyces Sp. : An Agent for Remedy of Oil Pollution oleh Gabriella Alicia Kosasih dan Teresa Maria Karina dari SMA St. Laurensia Tangerang, (3) Biological Control Using Trichogramma japonicum as Egg Parasite oleh Vincentius Gunawan dan Fernanda Novelia dari SMP Petra 3 Surabaya.

Dua medali emas dari fisika dengan judul presentasi (1) Balinese Gamelan: A Brainwave Synchronizer Oleh Idelia Chandra dan Christopher Alexander Sanjaya dari SMA St. Laurensia Tangerang, (2) Electrostatic Precipitator as The Solution of Military Tanks? Smoke Negative Effects oleh Guinandra Lutfan Jatikusumo dari SMA Taruna Nusantara Magelang.

Satu emas dari ilmu komputer dengan judul penelitian M-Batik : The Computation of Indonesia?s Dying Traditional Batik Design oleh Nugra Akbari dari SMA Global Mandiri Jakarta.

Kontingen Indonesia juga meraih satu perak dengan penelitian : Durian Seeds As Raw Material For Ketchup Sauce And Crisp oleh Dwiky Rendra Graha Subekti dari SMA St. Theresiana 01 Semarang.

Indonesia juga dapat tiga perunggu, dengan judul penelitian (1) "The Effect Of Myrmelleon SP On Blood GlucoseLevel Of Rats" oleh Lydia Felita Limbri dan Allen Michelle Wihono dari SMA St. Laurensia Tangerang; (2) "The Effects Of Mangostin On The Spermatogenesis Of Male White Mice", oleh Melissa Nadia Natasha dan Terrenz Kelly Tjong dari SMA St. Laurensia Tangerang; dan (3) "Fin With Mathematics Using Hamming Code on Birthdate Guesser karya I Made Rayo Putra Indrawan dan Andika Setia Budi dari SMA Petra 2 Surabaya.

Membanggakan

"Sangat membanggakan bahwa Indonesia tampil memukau pada presentasi enam makalah di bidang lingkungan hidup yang selaras dengan peranan global Indonesia untuk masalah-masalah lingkungan," kata Dubes Hazairin Pohan.

Menurut dia, mayoritas hasil penelitian di bidang ekologi yang dipaparkan oleh para pelajar kita dalam festival keilmuan dunia itu mencerminkan concerns Indonesia yang dipercaya PBB menjadi salah satu troika untuk mengatasi perubahan iklim global.

"Yang lebih membesarkan hati kita bukan saja karena Indonesia menjadi juara umum, tetapi capaian terbaik medali emas juga diraih oleh Vincentius Gunawan dan Fernanda Novelia yang notabene adalah pelajar pada tingkat SMP, yakni siswa dari SMP Petra 3 Surabaya. Ini menunjukkan minat keilmuan serta keunggulan anak-anak didik kita bahkan pada tingkat pelajar SMP juga mendapat pengakuan dunia," demikian Dubes Pohan.

Indonesia pertama kali mengikuti lomba ini pada ICYS ke-12 pada tahun 2005 di kota Katowice, Polandia. Ketika itu Tim Indonesia membawa penelitian di bidang Fisika yang berjudul "The Physics of Badminton" memperoleh satu medali perunggu yang diraih oleh Dhina Pramita Susanti asal sekolah dari SMAN 1 Semarang - Jawa Tengah bersama Chrisanthy Rebecca Surya asal sekolah dari SMA Dian Harapan Tangerang.

Penelitian bidang Fisika lainnya adalah dengan judul "Chaos in The Experimental Problem of The IPHO 35", memperoleh Special Award yang diraih oleh Anneke Nelce Bowaire asal sekolah dari SMAN 1 Serui, Papua bersama Diatra Zulaika Husodo asal sekolah dari SMA Al Izhar Pondok Labu, Jakarta.

Pada ICYS ke-13 tahun 2006 di Stuttgart, Jerman, Tim Indonesia mengirimkan enam peserta (lima bidang Fisika dan satu bidang Ekologi) berhasil meraih dua perunggu dalam bidang penelitian fisika. Pada ICYS ke-13 ini pula untuk pertama kalinya, Indonesia mendapat kehormatan untuk menjadi anggota tim juri bidang Fisika, Monika Raharti, M.Si. yang juga sebagai team leader yang memimpin kontingen Indonesia di Pszczyna.

Sebuah medali perak dalam bidang Fisika berhasil diraih oleh Tim Indonesia pada ICYS ke- 14 pada tahun 2007 yang diadakan di kota Saint-Petersburg, Rusia.

Prestasi Tim Indonesia meningkat terus, pada tahun 2008 ICYS ke-15 yang diselenggarakan di kota Chernivtsky, Ukraina, Tim Indonesia meraih satu perak di bidang Ekologi, satu perunggu di bidang Ekologi, dua perunggu di bidang Fisika, empat Special Award yaitu untuk Best Performance bidang Fisika, untuk Teaching in Physics bidang Fisika, untuk Most Creative Research bidang Computer Science dan untuk Best Research bidang Matematika.

What’s Goji All About?

Everybody wants to stay feeling and looking young this is what the goji berry is supposed to do. If you don’t know what goji juice is then you’re not alone. Weaknesses Of The Kangen Water System

All the advanced machines today use plates that take advantage of either mesh or slotted plate technology. By breaking up the surface of the plates, the machines create a greater total surface area that comes in contact with the water, and thus filter more thoroughly.

To understand this concept, consider this: Would you rather run on a flat track, or on a track that requires you to run up and down a series of hills? Obviously, the flat track will be easier because the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. The Kangen Water System offers water a flat track, whereas the more advanced machines (particularly KYK Genesis and Tyent 7070) require the water to run up and down the hills, for a more effective filtration.

The Kangen Water System Uses One Filter
All the top systems these days use at least two filters to be sure to clear all the contaminants from your water before it reaches your family's lips. One filter just doesn't do the same job as two. Top water filters will have a carbon filter as well as a more complex media filter in order to remove fluoride, chlorine and any other heavy metals. You really don't know how effective the Kangen Water System is going to be with its single filter, and that's a chance you're taking by buying their machine.

On top of there being only one filter, their filter contains the chemical "calcium sulfite" which is a common food preservative. Some people believe this chemical is bad for your health, and though we haven't read anything conclusive, we prefer to stay away from most preservatives in general.

This is probably the worst part about their machine. In order for their machine to reach the pH levels they advertise, you have to insert a liquid that they call an "electrolysis enhancer" which has a warning label right on the bottle which states "Do Not Drink." Uhhh... why would I put a substance I'm not supposed to drink into my water?

But it gets worse. They claim that the liquid is just a salt (saline) solution. However, when asked if salt water or homemade saline solutions would be acceptable replacements, they will tell you no. Furthermore, the ingredients list more than simply salt. So on top of the annoyance of having to regularly purchase these bottles in order to use the Kangen Water System, you have no idea what you're actually putting in your water. All you know is that it's a bottle of something that says Do Not Drink.
